On February 6,2017 London bred musician Sampha made history. Hot off the release of his debut album Process, Sampha sold out his first headline show in the US and it just so happened to be in my backyard of Chicago. Considering I flirted with the thought of traveling to the UK just to see Sampha perform live, it’s an understatement to say I was excited to be in attendance.
What impressed me the most was throughout Sampha's performance, there was no drop off in vocal quality. His soulful tone infused with layers of emotion sounds just as good live as he does on his studio projects. He also delivered with strong stage presence. I was a bit reluctant about his ability to keep the crowds attention due to his naturally meek demeanor, but he did and most of it was credited to his incredible musicianship. Between songs he would improv sound fx's and modulate the pitch of his records resulting in an insane sonic mash up of something familiar but yet improvisational. He performed most of the records off of his new album. My only disappointment was wanting to hear more of his older material.
